Current Projects

Data Warehouse
The company I work for (ALLTEL - Healthcare Services Division) develops database solutions for large hospitals. The flagship product is a transaction oriented, hierarchical, highly proprietary, mainframe database. My project develops a suite of tools that we call EDR (Enterprise Data Repository) that creates a data warehouse from this data. The data warehouse uses Oracle 7.x.
Query and Programming Tools
As part of the EDR project, one of my tasks is to find query tools that our customers can use. I have a list of the tools that I have looked at. I tend to be a collector of software tools.Part of this interest goes back to my experience with compiler development.
Web Page development
Of course, one of the key things that I am working on is how to get this clinical data so that it is available on the Web, most likely in an Intranet. I am also interested in ActiveX and other Web technology which is what I used on this page.

Employee Information

Job title
Client/Server Developer

The title that I would use if it was just my choice is: Curiosity Engineer.

Key responsibilities
One of the nice things about the EDR project is that everyone gets to do some of everything: PC, Unix, Mainframe, C, C++, PowerBuilder, SQL and Oracle stuff. For the most part I work on the PowerBuilder program that lets users "edit" the transformations that will be done as the data moves the proprietary database to Oracle. Our latest release also accepts data from other sources that look like a "flat file" to us.

Employer
I work for ALLTEL. The Healthcare Services Division does not have its own Web site yet but there is a home page for ALLTEL itself.

Note: On January 24, 1997, the ALLTEL Healthcare Division was merged with IH Solutions to form a new, privately held company called Eclipsys.

Personal Interests

Sports Arenas in the Bay Area
I am writing a book (more likely a pamphlet) describing how the various sports facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area treat those who are in wheelchairs. The title is very unoriginal but I think it has a little extra meaning: Take Me Out to the Ballgame.
Accessible Technology
I have done a little bit of work for a non-profit that tries to make technology more accessible for people (especially children) with handicaps. The best way to reach them is by leaving a voice mail message at 415-961-6789.
Business Ideas
Sometimes I come up with ideas for a business but I don't really have the time to start a new business every time an idea pops into my head. If you are looking for an idea then maybe you will like one of my ideas. I don't expect to get any remuneration unless you get rich and write a book (in which case I you could give me an acknowledgement) or if you want me to be a consultant (in which case I'm not cheap but reasonable).
Questions That Need Answers
There are some questions that are just "cosmic." They need answers (IMHO) and I'm not above trying to answer them myself. However, it lends more credibility if there is a reference. It lends Web-like credibility (is that an oxymoron?) if the reference is a hyperlink. I'll try to do the best I can.
Movies
I go to 50 to 80 movies per year. That's far fewer than real movie critics but more than people who have other activities. I make a top 10 list each year just for the exercise. I have put some of my top 10 lists on this site. So far I have them for 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1996.
